Task 2d: Specific Lines of Inquiry

I had previously created the following lines of Inquiry after initially completing Task 2d.......

Emerging Lines of Inquiry

  • How can Music and Dance be made more accessible to children from a young age?
  • Ways in which I can still perform whilst holding down a teaching career?
  • Finding creative and fun ways to teach children manners - would this change their behaviour within the lesson? Would be good to experiment with this!
  • Studying in more detail the benefits of Music and Dance to children with disabilities.
From the comments I received, I realised that my lines of Inquiry were far too general and I needed to be much more specific if i were to actually achieve the goals set.

On this note, I have decided to focus on 2 specific investiagtions which I hope to explore fully throughout the duration of the course.

1 - To explore the 'Musical Theatre' Cabaret scene, particularly in the North West of England

Performing as a Cabaret artist would enable me to combine a teaching career whilst still getting the opportunity to perform.  As a Cabaret artist you would tend to work weekends and only for a few hours at a time.  I would like to explore the corporate scene, rather than the traditional 'working man's club' venue.  I doubt there would be any need for a Musical Theatre performer within that scene, however I know of Musical Theatre performers who do perform within the corporate scene.  I will try to utilise my networks and gain as much knowledge and information as I can.

2 - Researching into Primary School's Curriculum and finding out when and how the Arts are introduced to young children within their School life?

One of my more general aims was to find out how Music and Dance can be more accessible to Children at a young age?  I thought a starting point for this would be to see how it is introduced in Schools.  At what age is it introduced and at what level? Does it happen on a regular basis or is it very infrequent? Is it set within the curriculum or does it really depend on the teachers and the school? I believe it should be introduced at an early age and exploring this in more detail will help me to learn more about the current state of the Arts within the early stages.  I have a couple of friends who are Primary School teachers, so I will be utilising their knowledge to help me with this, along with my own personal research.

I believe these are 2 much more specific aims that I can realistically explore throughout the duration of the course.  These will be ongoing explorations and I intend to update regularly with my progress.
